The Well Chapel at Witnesham, Suffolk

The Well Chapel at Witnesham is under the charge of Bishop Charles Mugleston of the ILCF. It is a regular venue for sacramental worship in the liberal tradition as well as hosting special services of ordination and consecration. Pictures of one such service from August 2007 may be found here, which also offer a glimpse of the interior of the chapel. See also http://www.onesuffolk.co.uk/TheWellChapel.

About the Well Chapel

Give me this day some space apart
To listen to this voice within my heart
Give me this day some space to see,
The window opened to Eternity
Karen Ren'e (adapted)

This simple, profound and very beautiful poem expresses the Mystical Heart and Purpose of Christianity and of all the other genuine Spiritual Traditions in the world who have Shared in Serving the Universal Wisdom since the earliest times.

Their sole - soul - purpose is to raise humanity to Full Humanity - to Full Conscious Union of our Souls with The One God - "Seeing God in all things - and all things in God" and this is the purpose of the gentle rhythm of Communion + Worship offered at The Well Chapel - setting the Soul Free - through "The Practice of the Presence of God" - Initiating and progressively re-uniting it with Infinite Light, Eternal Life and Absolute Love...just as Mother Julian of Norwich reveals to us in her wonderful book "The Revelations of Divine Love" written way back in the late 1300s.

Origins
Once upon a time, many years ago - in the early 1200s to be roughly precise - a Richard Weyland built a Free Chapel dedicated to St Thomas on the other side of the village. Divine Service was held there regularly until it was demolished around 1485-1505 apparently because of a tithe dispute.

That Free Chapel "as a gesture that rises up out of the depths of time" is the inspiration behind this Free Chapel which is dedicated to St Raphael, the Archangel of Healing (Raphael means "God Heals").

Name
The Well Chapel's name springs...from the fact that it is near a very deep well, as well...as springing from another meaning of the word - good health, as well...as springing from yet another meaning - of surprise through sudden realisation! which hopefully in a dedicated, focussed setting will be an Intuitive Insight of God's Unity, Truth, Goodness and Beauty, Love, Wisdom and Power. As an Eastern Sage once remarked: "We are like someone immersed in water, who complains of nothing to drink!"

As a Free Chapel "Where the Spirit of the Lord IS, there IS Freedom" (2Cor3v17) as in name - so in nature. Our Services are open to everyone of any Faith or none. In Essence, we are all - Universal - and when...the Human Soul comes to know itself, all labels drop off and with True or New Vision - with an all round perspective...we shall both See and Be ourselves as we Essentially are - ONE SPIRIT WITH GOD.

"Draw near to God - and God will draw near to you"

So do pop along sometime to explore, experience, express and enjoy The Presence of God in your Soul's Deeps - The Divine I AM - "welling up to Eternal Life" (John 4.1-30) for Now is Christ Risen + Nous is Now Conscious of Itself. As Dean Inge rightly says in his book Christian Mysticism "draw...from the deep wells of inner consciousness" and "All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well" - Julian of Norwich.

"We have only to be still and let the waters of Grace refresh us."
Sister Wendy Beckett

"In order to know God, and enter into the peace of God, we have to learn to become still. Not still in the psychic or mediumistic sense, which is a state of negative passivity, but "still" in a spiritual sense. This stillness is the repose of the Infinite and Eternal which is really the highest possible state of mental and spiritual activity."
Henry Thomas Hamblin

"The very best and utmost attainment in this life is to remain still and let God act and speak in you."
Meister Eckhart

A prayer attributed to Sir Francis Drake (c.1540-96)
Disturb us, Lord, when we are too well pleased with ourselves; when our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little; when we arrive safely because we sailed too close to the shore.
Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly - to venture on wider seas where storms will show your mastery; where, losing sight of land, we shall find the stars.
